How to Evaluate AI Resume Screening Before You Buy

Every ATS demo in 2026 shows AI that screens resumes in seconds and runs first-round interviews on its own.

The slides look identical from one vendor to the next: faster screening, consistent scoring, less manual work. The problem is that a demo runs on the vendor's data, with the vendor driving.

It tells you the feature exists. It does not tell you whether it works on your roles, in your markets, in your languages.

This guide gives you four tests that cut through the sameness, plus the pricing and pilot questions that go with them. It is written for a buyer who has AI features on the shortlist and wants evidence instead of a sizzle reel.

Why AI features look identical in demos

Vendors demo on clean, English, well-formatted resumes for a generic role, and the AI performs beautifully. Your hiring is messier: local-language and mixed-format resumes, roles with specific requirements, volumes that spike. The gap between the demo and your reality is exactly where AI quality varies between vendors. So the whole approach below is the same move repeated: make the AI run on your material, not theirs.

Test 1: Run it on your own resumes, in your own languages

Bring a batch of real resumes from your markets, including local-language files and the messy formats real candidates send. Ask the vendor to run the parser and screening live.

Watch for accurate field extraction with no manual cleanup, and sensible ranking on a role you know well. A parser that reads English cleanly but mangles a Bahasa Indonesia or Chinese resume will not scale across APAC. As a reference point for what vendors claim, Moka AI states 98% parsing accuracy and a screening speed of around 1,000 resumes per minute on its AI resume screening page. Treat any such figure as a claim to verify on your own files, not a given.

Test 2: Ask how the AI-to-recruiter agreement rate is measured

The number that matters for screening is how often the AI's recommendations match what your recruiters would decide. Ask for the agreement rate, and then ask the harder question: how was it measured. A credible answer names the sample size, the roles, and the markets. A vague "around 90%" with no method behind it is marketing.

Moka AI, for example, reports 92% agreement with recruiter decisions on the same page. The figure is only useful if the vendor can tell you what it was measured against, so put the method question to every vendor on your list, and ask them to reproduce the result on a role of yours during a pilot.

Test 3: Run a structured AI first-round interview

For first-round screening interviews, check whether the AI can run or support a structured screen rather than a free-form chat. The useful version generates questions from the job description and the candidate's resume, applies a shared scoring rubric, and produces a summary that lands on the candidate record.

The value is consistency: interviewers in different countries and teams score candidates on the same scale, and feedback is on record and easy to compare. Ask to see the rubric and the summary, not just the conversation. As a benchmark for what AI interview summaries are meant to deliver, Moka AI points to faster interview feedback through AI-generated summaries on its AI interview page. Again, confirm it on your own role.

Draw one line clearly in every demo: the AI ranks candidates, asks questions, and explains its reasoning. People make the hiring decision. Be wary of any vendor pitching the AI as the decision-maker.

Test 4: Check explainability, human control, and audit logs

Good AI screening is not a black box. For each of these, ask the vendor to show it:

  • Explainability. When the AI ranks or flags a candidate, can it show why, in terms a recruiter and a candidate could understand?
  • Human in the loop. Is a person reviewing every recommendation, with the final decision theirs?
  • Audit logs. Is there a record of what the AI did and what the recruiter decided, that you could produce if a candidate or a regulator asked?

These are not only governance niceties. In several APAC markets, how AI uses personal data in hiring is a live regulatory question, so explainability and logs are part of whether you can use the feature at all. Ask about them before you fall in love with the screening speed.

AI is often billed separately

The AI you just tested may not be in the base price. Many vendors bill AI features through credits or add-ons, with allowances that run out during a hiring peak. Ask for the included AI usage and the overage rate in writing, and make sure the pilot you run reflects real volume. For how this fits total cost, see the companion article "How Much Does ATS Software Cost? Pricing Models and Hidden Costs".

Turn the tests into a two-week pilot

The cleanest way to run all four tests is a short pilot on one live role. Give the vendor a real open job and a batch of your resumes, let the AI screen and run first-round interviews, and compare its output to your recruiters' judgment over two weeks. Agree up front on what "good" looks like: the agreement rate you need, parsing accuracy on local-language files, and a usable rubric and summary.

A pilot on your own role, with your own data, settles in two weeks what no amount of demo-watching can. A vendor confident in its AI will run it. A vendor that only wants to show you slides has told you something too.

Next step

Put the four tests in your evaluation plan, and ask for a two-week pilot on one live role before you commit. If you want to run that pilot with an AI-native platform, ask Moka AI to screen your resumes and run a first-round interview on your own open role, then check the results against your recruiters.
